The Center for Oral Health (COH), in collaboration with Oral Health America (OHA) and Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine, organized a symposium on school-based dental care services. The event took place on September 27, 2013 at Western University.
The purpose of this Share and Learn Conference was to bring together local community programs in the Southern California area to share information and learn about new initiatives and develop possible partnerships. The conference included an engaging agenda to create a forum to motivate change and build partnerships.
The symposium sought to:
- Educate local programs about new school based oral health models
- Inform programs about advocacy and policy issues that may affect program operations in the Southern California area
- Connect programs and communities with resources to enhance and improve their oral health programs.
In addition, COH and OHA have published a report highlighting the commitment of participant organizations and summarizing the challenges and opportunities participant organizations face in their efforts to serve their communities. The report will advance recommendations for government and foundations, policy- and decision-makers on what works and how to best support our collective work.
This one day conference was attended by approximately 100 participants— which included mostly dentists, hygienists, nurses and program administrators from Southern California Counties (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Bernardino and San Diego)— who serve vulnerable populations in a school-based or school-linked setting to improve the oral health for children and families.
